Tulane-sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan (T-SHIP)

The Tulane-sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan (T-SHIP) offers access to both New Orleans area healthcare providers and on-campus services as well as simplified billing and convenient on-campus prescription fulfillment.

T-SHIP is provided in collaboration with United Healthcare Student Resources (UHCSR). It can be used as a primary health insurance plan or may supplement a student's existing family insurance plan. Coupled with the Student Health and Wellness Fee, T-SHIP covers visits to Tulane's on-campus Health Center--including the cost of medical supplies, laboratory tests, and examination fees.

While we recommend that Tulane students enroll in T-SHIP, we understand that some students will prefer to waive enrollment in favor of comparable coverage. Tulane has partnered with Gallagher Student Health & Special Risk to verify student coverage online. To demonstrate equivalent or better coverage to waive, please first review the benefits comparison and health insurance requirements.

Some out-of-state and international health insurance plans may lack coverage in the New Orleans area. T-SHIP ensures access to a wealth of providers in New Orleans, including the city's major hospitals and a wide array of specialists. T-SHIP also covers students when they travel, so they're covered at home and abroad.

Billing and Reimbursement ▾

When you receive a bill from a provider or facility you visited outside The Health Center, follow these steps:

  1. Do not ignore the bill.
  2. Figure out if it is (a) a bill, (b) a statement of charges sent to your insurance company (explanation of benefit), or (c) a processed claim.
  3. Does the billing provider have your insurance information?  Usually there is a space on the back of the billing invoice to provide this information or a number you can call for clarification.
  4. If you have T-SHIP and you have questions about a claim or a denial, call the Customer Service number, 800-767-0700.  Be sure to get the name of the representative who assists you.
  5. If your claim was denied, did you have the required referral?  Please note that referrals cannot be backdated and must be renewed each policy year.
  6. For billing/reimbursements problems that persist after you have followed the above steps, please contact the Student Health Insurance office.
