Tulane University Health Insurance Requirements

Since 2003, Tulane University has required health insurance for students, highlighting the University’s commitment to promoting good health and meeting the medical needs of its students. Tulane University’s criteria for adequate health insurance are designed to assure that all students have access to quality, timely, confidential, and affordable medical and mental health care, and to protect students against medical costs that could undermine their education and affect their financial or personal well-being. The unexpected occurrence and expense of a medical condition can interrupt, and even end, a student’s academic career. It is for these reasons that Tulane requires students to be covered by a health insurance plan that is comparable or exceeds the Tulane University-sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan (T-SHIP).

Health Insurance: Every Student, Every Year

All degree-seeking students and all Tulane University-sponsored students in J-1 status are required to have health insurance. Under this requirement, students must either enroll in T-SHIP or provide documentation of enrollment in a comparable United States-domiciled plan.

All new students wishing to waive enrollment in T-SHIP will need to complete the annual waiver process prior to their program start date or first day of class, whichever occurs earlier, of their first semester at Tulane. All returning students must also complete the enrollment/waiver process annually by the last day to register/add classes.* Review the enrollment/waiver process and deadlines.

After submission of the waiver form, you will receive an email notification (at your student's Tulane email) indicating if your waiver has been approved, if additional information is needed, or if your waiver has been denied. No late waiver or exceptions to the insurance requirements will be granted.

Each year, all degree-seeking students are automatically uploaded into the T-SHIP waiver process.*

Comparable Insurance Requirements for Waiver of T-SHIP

Requests to waive may be granted with demonstration of comparable insurance that:

  1. Is provided by a company licensed to do business in the United States, with a U.S. claims payment office and a U.S. telephone number.
  2. Will be in force for the duration of the academic year, or until the student’s program ends.
  3. Provides coverage for health care where the student is attending classes (whether on a Tulane Campus or elsewhere). The plan must include:
  • Unlimited annual and lifetime benefits (i.e. there is no policy maximum).
  • Non-emergency/urgent care in the New Orleans area. 
  • Emergency and follow-up care in the New Orleans area.
  • Coverage for club sports. (This requirement does not apply to NCAA competitive sports.)
  • Coverage for the entire academic year while attending Tulane.
  • Pharmacy benefits.
  • Mental health benefits.
  • Coverage of pre-existing conditions without a waiting period (some examples may include: heart disease, renal failure, cancer)
  • International students in F-1 status sponsored by Tulane University and all international students in J-1 status sponsored by Tulane University have additional minimum waiver requirements for acceptable alternative coverage. ADDITIONAL requirements for international students are as follows:
    1. No less than 90% coinsurance and has a maximum deductible of $250.

    2. Comprehensive plan information is provided in English.

    3. A United States claims payment office and United States telephone number.

    4. Direct payment to providers.

    5. Medical evacuation benefits of at least $50,000.

    6. Repatriation benefits of at least $25,000.

Please note, the following plans do not typically meet waiver requirements: Kaiser Permanente, most state specific HMO and PPO plans, Tufts Health Plan, and Fallon Health Plan.

*T-SHIP is a University-Sponsored Health Insurance Plan available to Tulane students. Premiums collected are paid directly to the Insurance Company and are non-refundable after the waiver date. The University does not receive any benefits for enrolling students into T-SHIP.

*Gallagher provides verification that insurance requirements are met; they are not an insurance broker for the University and are paid a flat rate to evaluate all submitted waivers. Gallagher does not receive any benefits for enrolling students into T-SHIP.
