BASICS - Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students

BASICS is not...

  • An alcohol education lecture
  • A program that only mandated students attend
  • The same for every student
  • Arbitrarily designed with no evidence base
  • Abstinence only
  • Blaming/judgmental

BASICS is...

  • A discussion where students do most of the talking
  • A program for all Tulane students
  • An individualized experience
  • An evidence-based program specifically designed for college students
  • A chance to discuss experiences with substances and set goals for future use
  • Non-judgmental; students are the expert and are not told what they "should" be doing

What can I expect during a BASICS appointment?

During your BASICS appointment you will meet with your BASICS facilitator to discuss your alcohol and/or marijuana use and strategies for reducing harm. During your first session you will also fill out a comprehensive online assessment about your experiences with alcohol and/or marijuana. During your second session you will go over your responses to this assessment with your facilitator.

I am interested in participating in BASICS. How do I register?

If you are interested in participating in BASICS, please email basics@tulane.edu. A staff member will respond to your request and walk you through the process.

What if I'm required to complete BASICS?

If you are required to attend, a staff member will register you in the online BASICS system. You will receive an e-mail with your login information and instructions for accessing the BASICS Student Portal to schedule your sessions. If you have misplaced your login information please email basics@tulane.edu

We strongly recommend that you do not reschedule your initial appointments. There are a limited number of appointments, and students who attempt to reschedule may not be able to find a new appointment that meets their administrative or conduct deadline for completion.

BASICS sessions are confidential. The only information a referrer will receive is whether or not a student completed the program.

Is there a cost for BASICS?

There is no fee associated with BASICS. A no-show fee will be assessed if you do not show up for your appointment.

Anyone who arrives more than 10 minutes late for a session will be required to reschedule.

Will anyone know if I've attended BASICS?

Confidentiality is an important aspect of the program and the information discussed during a session will not be shared. While BASICS sessions are confidential, information may be disclosed with a student's consent to appropriate administrators and health care professionals as needed. Furthermore, confidentiality cannot be upheld if a student indicates harm to self or others.
