International Students

We are pleased to offer you a range of medical, counseling and health promotion services that can support you in your academic pursuits and in your enjoyment of life at Tulane. We encourage you to learn more about our services.

We understand that adjusting to a new community and seeking health care in a country different from your home can feel challenging and, at times, uncomfortable. We are conscious of the diversity of the Tulane population and are committed to providing services that are sensitive, confidential, and responsive to your needs.

It is our hope that the information we provide through the Campus Health website will broaden your understanding of health care in the U.S. and of common questions posed by international students.

Before You Arrive at Tulane

Immunization Compliance

You must ask your healthcare provider to fill out Tulane's immunization compliance form. Once completed, please submit your Immunization Compliance Form and any related paperwork online through the Patient Portal. Students born outside the U.S. are required to obtain a QFT lab test and submit numerical results with the completed form.

While we recommend that students receive all required vaccines before arriving on campus when possible, we understand this may be challenging for international students. If you are unable to obtain any of the required immunizations before you arrive in the U.S., you may receive them at the Health Center once you are here. Please make an appointment with us promptly after your arrival in New Orleans to finish fulfilling these requirements.

Health Insurance

Health insurance is required for all Tulane students. All international students are required to buy the Tulane-sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan (T-SHIP) and do not have the option to request a waiver. On a case-by-case basis, international students may be considered for an exemption to this requirement when covered by a U.S.-based group health insurance plan (for example, a U.S.-based, employer-sponsored, ACA-compliant group plan).

In order to request an exemption, an international student must first provide documentation they are covered by a U.S.-based group health insurance plan as described in example above. Submit your request via the Let’s talk application. In addition, the plan must then meet all Tulane University insurance requirements. All requests are considered though no approval is guaranteed. All determinations regarding exemptions are made by the Campus Health Insurance and Enrollment Office and shall be considered final.

See the University health insurance requirements to learn University standards for adequate insurance. Also, be sure to carry your insurance card with you and take it with you to all visits to the Health Center or Pharmacy.

Online Wellness Courses

Complete the Online Wellness Courses to help you feel as prepared and confident as possible when you arrive at Tulane.

Please see the New Student Checklist for dates and deadlines.

Language Assistance

Students who would find it easier to talk about personal health concerns in their native language can ask our medical providers for telephonic language translation, which offers over 170 languages. This service can be requested when you make a health care appointment.
