Transgender and Non-Binary Health Services

Routine Healthcare Needs

For routine acute and primary care health concerns, regular clinic appointments are available to transgender and non-binary patients. If students feel comfortable seeing certain providers, we encourage them to please call our front desk to indicate their preferences.

Our services include:

  • Comprehensive primary care services
  • Contraceptive treatments and counseling
  • Testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
  • HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP)
  • Gender-affirming hormone therapy
  • Referral to specialty consultations in gender affirming surgery, if desired

Gender-Affirming Hormone Replacement Therapy

Hormones are not a part of every transition, but for those trans and non-binary students who desire them, monitoring by a specialized medical provider will ensure the hormonal regimen is safe and effective. Hormones need time to work and should be taken exactly as prescribed for you—taking more does not achieve faster results and can be dangerous. Physical changes with hormone therapy might take several years to be fully realized, and many of these changes are not reversible.

Considering hormone replacement therapy?

Schedule an appointment with Dr. Buth, the Campus Health gender-affirming care specialist, by calling 504-862-5255 or by logging on to the Patient Portal. This specialist can prescribe tailored gender-affirming hormonal treatments to suit your needs.

Already on hormone replacement therapy?

Once your hormonal regimen dosing and frequency has been established, you may schedule follow-up appointments every three months for refills and lab monitoring (if recommended). Schedule appointments at your convenience via the Patient Portal or call 504-862-5255.

Referrals for Other Transgender Health Needs

As part of its referral coordination service, The Health Center maintains a list of resources tor transgender health care and wellness needs beyond HRT, such as gender-affirming surgery consultations, hair removal, voice training, social support, etc. The Health Center is not connected to and does not endorse any of the providers on the list, but the list was designed to provide a starting point for students looking for needed support and services in the New Orleans area.
